WASHINGTON— Today, Congresswoman Lauren Underwood (IL-14) introduced the File Once FAFSA Act and the Student Loan Contract Act to simplify and increase transparency in the student loan application process. Each year, nearly 2 million undergraduate students who would have qualified for federal Pell Grants fail to apply for or refile the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

WASHINGTON— Today, Congresswoman Lauren Underwood (IL-14) announced that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has awarded Educare of West DuPage an additional $1,108,315 in federal grant funding for early childhood education programs. Educare of West DuPage is a part of a national network of schools partnered with Early Head Start funding to ensure more children in the state of Illinois have access to early education.

WASHINGTON – In a hearing today in the House Committee on Education and Labor, Congresswoman Lauren Underwood (IL-14), pressed Department of Labor Secretary R. Alexander Acosta on the Department’s regulations that deny women access to contraception and expand short-term, limited-duration health insurance plans that do not have to offer patient protections like coverage for pre-existing conditions or essential health benefits. The hearing marked the Secretary’s first appearance before the Committee in the 116th Congress.

Washington—Congresswoman Lauren Underwood (IL-14) today questioned Department of Education Secretary Betsy DeVos on the Department’s failures that limit the civil rights of students with disabilities. Under the leadership of Secretary DeVos, the Department has failed to be transparent about states’ applications for waivers to the 1% cap on alternate assessments enacted by the Every Student Succeeds Act.  This transparency is critical and required by law so parents can ensure their kids are getting the right assessments and a good education that allows them to fulfill their potential.
