Underwood Secures $1.2 Million in Funding for University Research and Infrastructure
WASHINGTON — This week, Representative Lauren Underwood announced a new round of federal funding she has secured for university research in the 14th District.
As a member of the Appropriations Committee, Underwood has made securing federal resources for northern Illinois a top priority. The following funds will support programs in the 14th District with federal resources:
Lewis University Airport, Romeoville, Illinois - $181,691
Lewis University Airport will receive $181,691 in federal funding from the State Block Grant Program to fund safety and infrastructure improvements. In addition to this funding, Underwood secured $1,552,500 for significant infrastructure improvements at the airport as part of Community Project Funding.
The State Block Grant funding will support the final phase of construction, including environmental and design work, and will help install 3,100 feet of perimeter fencing and six gates to meet current standards.
Rep. Underwood helped secure the funding through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
Northern Illinois University, DeKalb, Illinois - $450,000
Northern Illinois University will receive $450,000 in federal funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to fund their research project, “Heavy Quarks: A Window Beyond the Standard Model at the LHC.”
This funding will support Northern Illinois University’s research on high-energy physics and improve detector systems for future experiments while also engaging in outreach to underrepresented communities.

Northern Illinois University, DeKalb, Illinois - $570,000
Northern Illinois University will receive $570,000 in federal funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to fund their research project, “Using the Higgs Boson as a Tool to Search for New Physics at ATLAS.”
This funding will support a Northern Illinois University team working on the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, a particle physics laboratory in Geneva, Switzerland. The project includes significant outreach efforts to inspire K-12 students, teachers, and the public.
