In Letter to Biden Administration, Underwood, Foster, and Casten Call for Resources, Technical Assistance, and Coordination to Manage Influx of Migrants
JOLIET – Today, in a letter to the Biden Administration, Representatives Lauren Underwood (IL-14), Bill Foster (IL-11), Sean Casten (IL-06) and other Members of the Illinois delegation wrote to express Illinois’ urgent and continued need for federal support to address the ongoing influx of asylum-seekers arriving in suburban Chicago communities.
“Operation Lone Star is a deeply shameful political stunt that uses vulnerable human beings—men, women, children, and babies—to score political points. It is another heartbreaking chapter in the story of our broken immigration system,” Underwood said. “Republicans have created this humanitarian crisis, but we must ensure that these families are met with dignity and receive proper care throughout their journey. I am urging the Administration to use every available tool to support us as we navigate these challenges while upholding the values that make the 14th District so strong.”
In the letter, the Members urged the administration to streamline government-wide coordination and data sharing, expedite the work authorization process, and target support from the border’s Shelter and Services program to interior states like Illinois.
The Members call on the Administration to take swift and comprehensive action to alleviate the strain on suburban communities, and provide the resources, technical assistance, and coordination necessary to manage the influx of migrants safely and humanely.
