HEALTH POLICY ADVISOR OPENING – The Office of Congresswoman Lauren Underwood (IL-14), member of the House Committee on Appropriations and Co-Founder and Co-Chair of the Black Maternal Health Caucus, seeks an experienced Health Policy Advisor to lead a portfolio focused on health and veterans’ policy; with other issues as assigned. The Policy Advisor works with the Member, Chief of Staff, Legislative Director, and other staff to develop, drive, and implement the Member’s health policy agenda.
Responsibilities of this position include drafting and analyzing legislation; senior-level negotiation and policy/strategy development; developing and leading outreach initiatives; building and managing stakeholder coalitions; working with interns and the Communications team to run the BMHC newsletter and social media; conducting research and monitoring relevant internal and external developments; drafting policy memos, talking points, and remarks; meeting with constituents; staffing events and hearings; and other duties as assigned. This position also typically hires and supervises a full-time Maternal Health Intern who assists the Health Policy Advisor with these responsibilities.
Essential strengths of successful Health Policy Advisor candidates include curiosity and a commitment to public service; excellent legislative drafting and analysis skills; the ability to quickly execute multiple concurrent projects in a fast-paced environment; strong research, fact-checking, writing, and communication skills; organization and attention to detail; the ability to distill complex information in a way that is compelling to different audiences; bipartisan interpersonal and advocacy skills; and a strong working knowledge of federal policymaking and health policy subject matter.
This is not an entry-level or typical Legislative Assistant position; congressional experience and a strong background in health policy are required. The salary range is $70,000 - $90,000, depending on experience and qualifications. This position is located in-person in our Washington, D.C. office, with occasional telework opportunities. STAFF ASSISTANT - The Office of U.S. Representative Lauren Underwood (IL-14) seeks an organized and proactive professional to serve as Staff Assistant in our Washington, D.C. office. This position includes serving as the D.C. Driver. Essential strengths of ideal candidates include strong driving skills, excellent professional judgement and discretion, exceptional customer or constituent service skills, close attention to detail and time management, excellent writing and communication skills, an understanding or aptitude for database work, the ability to prioritize and follow through on multiple competing priorities in a fast-paced environment, and a strong commitment to public service. A valid U.S. driver’s license and a clean driving record are required for the position, but owning or having access to a car is not required. Candidates with Illinois ties are encouraged to apply.
In addition to driving, primary responsibilities include working with the Deputy Chief of Staff to manage D.C. office operations, including greeting and engaging visitors and callers, helping them navigate our office, and logging their views and requests in IQ; maintaining an office environment that emphasizes kindness and professionalism; providing administrative support to the legislative, communication, and front office teams; leading D.C.-based constituent services, including flag and tour requests; recruiting, hiring, and managing D.C. interns; ordering supplies; meticulously and accurately batching correspondence; staffing the Member in D.C.; and other duties as assigned.
This individual will also work closely with the communications team and may have the opportunity to grow in the role. Responsibilities include compiling daily press clips, maintaining press and influencer lists, drafting social media content, and other duties as assigned.
The annual salary range for this role is $55,000 - $60,000.
