Passing the Momnibus in End-of-Year Package is Americans’ Number One Priority, Poll Reveals

December 5, 2022

WASHINGTON – 72% of Americans rank passing Congresswoman Lauren Underwood’s (IL-14) Black Maternal Health “Momnibus” Act as their number one priority for the end-of-year package. 85% of Democrats, 63% of Independents, and 59% of Republicans support its immediate passage, according to a new poll from Navigator Research.

The Momnibus is Underwood’s signature legislation, and would save moms’ lives by comprehensively addressing the drivers of the nation’s maternal health crisis.

“The people have spoken: Passing the Momnibus is Americans’ number one priority,” said Underwood. “With such an urgent need for action and such widespread support for this legislation, every day that goes by without its passage is a disservice to millions of mothers and families. We can and we must pass the Momnibus immediately.”

America has the highest maternal mortality rate of any high-income country, and more than 80 percent of these deaths are preventable. Underwood, who serves as a co-founder and co-chair of the Black Maternal Health Caucus, wrote and re-introduced the Momnibus in 2021. The legislation makes critical investments to support community-based organizations, address social determinants of maternal health, grow and diversify the perinatal workforce, expand access to care for people with maternal mental health conditions and substance use disorders, and advance maternal health research.

The Momnibus is gaining momentum. Underwood’s bipartisan Protecting Moms Who Served Act was signed into law by President Biden in 2021 and other provisions of the Momnibus have passed in the House of Representatives with broad support.
