WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Rep. Underwood delivered her first floor address to voice her support for House Democrats’ efforts to protect Illinoisans’ health care. She voted in favor of a resolution that strengthens Congress’s hand to intervene against the Republicans’ monstrous Texas v. U.S. lawsuit, which seeks to strike down the entirety of the Affordable Care Act and its life-saving protections, including for the 5,471,600 people in Illinois with preexisting conditions. This resolution affirms the House Counsel’s authorization to intervene as a party in the lawsuit, asserting the House of Representative’s authority to defend laws it has passed and enacted into law.

“The people of the Illinois 14th elected me as their representative to protect their access to health care coverage and to make health care and prescription drugs more affordable,” said Rep. Underwood. “Today, I am proud to use my voice and my vote as their neighbor and as a nurse, to take an essential step to protect access to affordable coverage from the GOP’s cruel lawsuit which seeks to destroy the Affordable Care Act and its life-saving protections.”

Rep. Underwood delivered her first floor address to defend the Affordable Care Act and protect Americans with preexisting conditions.

In December, a federal district court judge in Texas ruled in favor of Republicans, issuing a stayed decision that would strike down the entirety of the Affordable Care Act, including:

  • Protections for people with preexisting conditions;
  • The ban on lifetime and annual limits on health coverage;
  • The Medicaid expansion covering 15 million Americans;
  • Health insurance affordability tax credits assisting 9 million Americans;
  • Bans on discriminatory insurance practices that force women to pay more for coverage;
  • Young adults’ ability to remain on their parents’ insurance until age 26, and more.

“I too have a preexisting condition, so I know personally how critically important having high-quality, affordable health care is for people,” said Rep. Underwood. “Our Democratic Congress is For The People, and we have wasted no time getting to work to protect families’ health care and financial security. I am proud to stand with the Democratic Majority to halt the GOP’s attacks on health care, and instead focus on lowering health costs and the price of prescription drugs, protecting people with preexisting conditions and preserving Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security.”
