WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Rep. Underwood joined House Democrats to pass the FY 2019 Transportation and Housing and Urban Development appropriations bills to re-open these two essential government agencies to ensure air travel and highway transportation are safe for all Americans and stand up for the hard-working Illinois families who are at imminent risk of being evicted.  As we enter Day 20 of the shutdown, thousands of American workers, including essential air traffic controllers, are arriving at work to find zero dollars on their paystubs.

“The people of the Illinois 14th deserve a fully functioning federal government, including services provided by the Departments of Transportation and Housing and Urban Development,” said Rep. Underwood.  “Our air travel safety and aviation community are at risk. Because of the shutdown, the Federal Aviation Administration has furloughed a significant portion of its workforce leaving fewer safety professionals on the job and stressing an already stretched aviation workforce who call the Illinois 14th home,” Rep. Underwood continued. “I believe in governing responsibly and will not allow the hard-working people of Illinois to be held hostage by this political stunt to shut down critical government agencies.  We will continue to work to re-open government, and keep our promise to deliver progress for all Americans.”
