Underwood Announces $625,000 in Federal Funding to Prevent and Reduce Youth Substance Abuse in Will County
JOLIET — Today, Representative Lauren Underwood (IL-14) announced that the Will County Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition (WCSAPC) will receive a total of $625,000 over the next five years from the Drug Free Communities (DFC) Support Program to help prevent and reduce youth substance abuse in Will County. Underwood helped secure the grant for WCSAPC through a letter of support and her work on the Appropriations Committee.
“I’ve always made it a top priority to bring home federal resources that will help support our kids and keep them safe and healthy,” said Underwood. “Organizations like the Will County Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition are doing critical work in our communities, and I’m thrilled that we were able to secure this funding to support their work serving young people in northern Illinois.”
The DFC program is managed through a partnership between the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The program works to mobilize community leaders around the country to identify and respond to substance abuse problems in their communities. The program strengthens partnerships and collaboration among public and private non-profit agencies, federal, state, local, and tribal governments to support the efforts of community coalitions working to prevent and reduce substance abuse among young people.
