Underwood-Backed INVEST in America Act Passes the House; Includes $19.7 Million for 14th District Transportation and Infrastructure Projects
Legislation would create good-paying jobs modernizing and rebuilding roads, bridges, transit, rail, and drinking water and wastewater systems
WASHINGTON— Today, legislation championed by Congresswoman Lauren Underwood (IL-14), the INVEST in America Act, passed the House of Representatives. The INVEST in America Act makes transformational investments in America's highways, roads, bridges, transit, rail, and water infrastructure to create jobs, modernize our infrastructure and reduce carbon pollution. This legislation puts some of the key pieces of President Biden's infrastructure vision into legislative text.
The INVEST in America Act also includes $19.7 million in direct federal funding secured by Underwood for projects in McHenry County, Kane County, Kendall County, Oswego, Batavia, DeKalb/Sycamore, Elgin, and Plainfield. Underwood successfully secured funding for each of the nine Member Designated Projects she submitted for consideration. Additional details on these projects are available below. All of the projects selected increase the safety, economic development, health, livability, and convenience of communities in northern Illinois.
"Infrastructure is more than just roads and bridges—it's an investment in families, businesses, our economy, and our future—and it's an investment that pays off. But it's crucial that as the federal government invests across the country they don't leave places like the 14th District behind—which is why I'm fighting to deliver these critical resources for projects in our community. I was proud to go to bat for northern Illinoisans to help modernize our community's transportation and infrastructure and ensure that we have the resources so families can thrive. I'll continue to work with my colleagues to pass these priorities into law," said Rep. Underwood.
In addition to directly funding Underwood's projects, the INVEST in America Act includes $715 billion for the surface transportation reauthorization and water infrastructure bill. This includes:
- $51.25 billion for wastewater infrastructure
- $343 billion for roads, bridges, and safety
- $109 billion for transit
- $95 billion for passenger and freight rail
- $117 billion for drinking water infrastructure and assistance
