Underwood-Backed Legislation to Protect Civil Rights, Reverse Administration’s Muslim Travel Bans Passes the House

July 23, 2020

The NO BAN Act reverses the Administration’s Muslim bans and prohibits discrimination on the basis of religion

WASHINGTON— Today, Representative Lauren Underwood (IL-14) supported the passage of the National Origin-Based Antidiscrimination for Nonimmigrants (NO BAN) Act to reverse the Trump Administration's Muslim travel bans. The NO BAN Act, led by Representative Judy Chu (CA-27) and cosponsored by Underwood, rescinds all three versions of the President's Muslim ban, restores the separation of powers by limiting overly broad executive authority to issue future travel bans, and prohibits discrimination on the basis of religion.

"From Day One, this Administration has advanced a discriminatory policy toward Muslims—a policy that separates families, does nothing to make our country safer, and does not reflect northern Illinois values," said Underwood. "I'm proud to support the passage of the NO BAN Act, which affirms our commitment to civil rights and the ideals on which our country was founded: that our government does not discriminate based on religion."

The NO BAN Act is supported by nearly 400 organizations, including the National Council of Churches, U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, Church World Service, Muslim Advocates, Interfaith Alliance, National Immigration Law Center, America's Voice, Center for Constitutional Rights, Lawyer's Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, NAACP, UnidosUS, The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, International Refugee Assistance Project, U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants, ACLU, Anti-Defamation League, Amnesty International, United Methodist Church, NETWORK Lobby for Catholic Social Justice, National Council of Jewish Women, Leadership Conference of Women Religious, Americans United for Separation of Church and State, Human Rights Campaign, AFSCME, SEIU, American Federation of Teachers, League of Women Voters, National Women's Law Center, National Organization for Women, and MomsRising.
