Underwood Bill to Protect People with preexisting Conditions Advances, Considered By Energy and Commerce Committee
Legislation would to protect preexisting conditions and ban “junk” insurance plans
WASHINGTON—This week, the Health Subcommittee of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce considered Rep. Lauren Underwood's legislation, H.R. 1010, which would help protect Americans with preexisting conditions by overturning an Administration rule that expands limited duration insurance, commonly known as "junk plans." H.R. 1010 passed the Health Subcommittee by a vote of 19-13 and will now be sent to full committee for review.
"In Illinois' 14th District, I'm one of 300,000 people who have a preexisting condition, so the fight for health care is personal," said Congresswoman Underwood. "No person in this country should be denied insurance coverage as a result of a preexisting condition. Americans deserve quality and affordable health care."
In February, Underwood joined members to introduce H.R. 1010 following the Administration's decision to finalize the Short-Term, Limited Duration Insurance rule, which excludes protections for preexisting conditions and essential health benefits provided by the Affordable Care Act.
