Underwood Celebrates Record-Breaking Enrollment in Health Care Coverage Made Possible by Her Legislation to Lower Premium Costs
WASHINGTON – Representative Lauren Underwood (IL-14) celebrated the release of new data showing that more than 16.3 million people signed up for Marketplace health care coverage during the 2022-2023 Open Enrollment season, a record-breaking number made possible by Underwood’s legislation to lower out-of-pocket premium costs.
“As a registered nurse, I came to Congress to expand access to high-quality, affordable health care for every American,” said Underwood. “Thanks to tax credits from my legislation, extended in the Inflation Reduction Act, more families than ever before are getting covered. This record-breaking number of enrollments means that hundreds of thousands of Illinoisans and millions of additional Americans will now have access to health care, some for the very first time. This is a historic expansion of health care coverage, affordability, and equity that Congress must make permanent.”
Underwood’s Health Care Affordability Act makes more Americans eligible for tax credits to lower their premium costs and ensures that no American pays more than 8.5% of their household income on premiums – most pay far less. Thanks to the enhanced premium tax credits from Underwood’s bill, a family of four can save an average of $2,400 per year on Marketplace premium costs and four out of five people can find a plan for $10 or less per month.
With these historic health care cost savings, more than 16.3 million people — including more than 340,000 Illinoisans — signed up for Marketplace coverage during the most recent Open Enrollment period, the highest enrollment number ever.
