Underwood Honors Illinois Veterans, Participates in Aurora Interfaith Food Pantry Veterans Day Pantry Distribution

November 11, 2020

WEST CHICAGO—On Veterans Day, Congresswoman Lauren Underwood (IL-14) honored Illinois veterans by participating in the Interfaith Food Panty Veterans Day Pantry Distribution. The Interfaith Food Pantry in Aurora is one of the largest food pantries in northern Illinois and is dedicated to ending hunger in the community. During the event, Underwood joined community members to help distribute meals to Illinois veterans.

"Veterans have sacrificed so much in service to our country, and it's up to all of us to ensure they have the resources they need to thrive in our community, especially during a pandemic," said Underwood. "I was honored to join leaders from the Interfaith Food Panty this Veterans Day to support the heroes in our community."

As a member of the Committee on Veterans' Affairs, the Servicewomen and Women Veterans Congressional Caucus, and the Women Veterans Task Force, Underwood has worked to improve veterans' access to quality care and has worked to help ensure veterans receive the care they have earned. In October, Underwood's legislation, the Veterans' Care Quality Transparency Act to address the veteran suicide crisis was signed into law by the President. In August, Underwood introduced the Lethal Means Safety Training Act (H.R. 8084) which would direct the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to expand its evidence-based lethal means safety training to VA staff and contractors who regularly interact with veterans. Underwood's legislation includes expanding evidence-based training that both VA and the White House have called for to address the veteran suicide crisis. In September 2019, Underwood introduced the ACE Veterans Act and the Post-9/11 Veteran Suicide Prevention Counseling Act to improve access to quality care for veterans.
