Underwood to Question Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen in Hearing
Underwood is Vice Chair of the Committee on Homeland Security
WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Lauren Underwood (IL-14), Vice Chair of the Committee on Homeland Security, will question Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen on the Department's policies. Today's hearing will be the first time Nielsen has testified before the Committee since the Administration instituted family separation at the border.
"While many of my colleagues will come tomorrow as lawyers, rightfully pressing Secretary Nielsen about the atrocities at the border, I will come from a different perspective: I'm not a lawyer, I'm a nurse. Under Secretary Nielsen's leadership, the Department of Homeland Security has separated families at the border resulting in unnecessary and devastating health outcomes in children that may be irreversible. This is both a moral outrage and a health crisis," Congresswoman Underwood said.
