Underwood Re-Elected to House Leadership

November 21, 2024

WASHINGTON—Representative Lauren Underwood (IL-14) released the following statement after being re-elected to House Leadership for the 119th Congress as Co-Chair of the Democratic Policy and Communications Committee:

“It is an honor and privilege to have the trust and support of my colleagues at this critically important time in our history,” Underwood said. “I’m looking forward to the work ahead—empowering our Caucus to defeat extremism and making sure our communities know about House Democrats’ commitment and intense focus on lowering costs and making life better for the American people.”

Underwood is the first Black woman to be elected by her colleagues to House leadership since Representative Shirley Chisholm was elected in 1977, and the only Black woman currently elected to congressional leadership in either chamber.
