Underwood Secures $41,039,207 in Funding to Boost Solar Energy Projects for Local Small Business and Improve Rail Safety
WASHINGTON — This week, Representative Lauren Underwood announced a new round of federal funding she has secured to support local businesses in northern Illinois.
As a member of the Appropriations Committee, Underwood has made securing federal resources for northern Illinois a top priority. The following funds will support renewable energy in northern Illinois with federal resources:
E K Kuhn Inc., DeKalb County, Illinois - $20,000
E K Kuhn, a local sign manufacturing business will receive $20,000 from the USDA’s Rural Energy for American Program (REAP) to purchase and install a 31 kilowatt solar array. This project will generate more than $6,000 in savings per year and replace 34,437 kilowatt hours (kWh) per year.
Rep. Underwood helped secure the funding through the Fiscal Year 2024 Appropriations funding package.
Grain Farm, Kane County, Illinois - $50,060
A grain farm in Kane County will receive $50,560 from the USDA’s Rural Energy for American Program (REAP) to purchase and install a 32 kilowatt solar array. This project will generate more than $3,900 in savings per year and replace 41,328 kilowatt hours (kWh) per year.

Grain Farm, LaSalle County, Illinois - $13,647
A grain farm in LaSalle County will receive $13,647 from the USDA’s Rural Energy for American Program (REAP) to purchase and install a 14 kilowatt solar array. This project will generate more than $1,400 per year in savings and will replace 14,462 kilowatt hours (kWh) per year.

OmniTRAX Holdings Combined, Incorporated, LaSalle County, Illinois - $40,955,000
OmniTRAX Holdings Combined Inc. will receive $40,955,000 to improve the safety, efficiency, and reliability of their freight rail short lines in the region. The project in LaSalle will rehabilitate the LaSalle Yard in Peru, Illinois to improve safety, efficiency, and customer service and will optimize the existing yard configuration and restore tracks and switches to a condition that will allow for long term operations at a safe and efficient level.
