Underwood Statement on Anniversary of Shooting at Northern Illinois University
WASHINGTON –Congresswoman Lauren Underwood (IL-14) today released the following statement on the eleventh anniversary of the shooting that took place at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb on February 14, 2008.
"Eleven years later, the shooting at Northern Illinois University still weighs heavy on our community's heart. Since that tragic day, we've witnessed gun violence in our nation's elementary schools, concerts, churches, and in Parkland—just last year on this very same day. My thoughts are with the families and neighbors of those who we have lost, but that is not enough. I came to Congress to act—this has to stop. That starts with strengthening federal gun laws and making sure everyone who buys a gun has had a background check."
Underwood is a cosponsor of H.R. 8, legislation that requires a background check for every firearm sale. The legislation passed last night out of the House Judiciary Committee.
