Underwood Statement on Resignation of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen
WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Lauren Underwood (IL-14), Vice Chair of the Committee on Homeland Security, today released the following statement on the resignation of U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen. Underwood spent this weekend at the U.S.-Mexico border with members of the Committee examining ports of entry and learning about the conditions at detention facilities for those seeking asylum.
“Ensuring the safety of our country and doing so in a manner consistent with our values should be the Department of Homeland Security’s number one priority. When I questioned Secretary Nielsen in the Homeland Security Committee just last month, it was clear she either did not know the extent of the consequences of the Department’s policies, including what family separation is doing to children’s mental and physical health, or knew and continued anyway. The next leader of the Department of Homeland Security should lead with American values and I stand ready to work with them to ensure the security of our country.”
