Underwood Statement on Supreme Court’s Decision to Uphold Birthright Citizenship
WASHINGTON—Today, Representative Lauren Underwood released the following statement after the Supreme Court decision in Trump v. Barbara, upholding birthright citizenship:
“The question of who gets to be an American was settled 158 years ago—just three years after slavery was abolished—when the 14th Amendment was ratified: every child born in the United States is a citizen of the United States,” said Rep. Lauren Underwood. “History tells us that when citizenship is conditional it is immigrants and Black Americans who are forced to prove our legitimacy. But Donald Trump is not a king, and the Constitution does not bend to his whim. The 14th Amendment is one of the most important legal safeguards we have ever won, andtoday’s decision is a rejection of his authoritarian power grab and his dark and exclusionary vision of America.”
