Underwood Sworn into 119th Congress for Fourth Term

January 3, 2025

WASHINGTON— Today, Representative Lauren Underwood (IL-14) was sworn in as United States Representative for Illinois’ 14th Congressional District, representing the people of northern Illinois in the 119th Congress.

“I am so proud to call the 14th District home and it is the honor of my life to represent our community in Congress,” Underwood said. “There is so much work to do, and I remain committed to the mission that first brought me to Washington: Lowering costs for Illinois families, and making quality health care more affordable and accessible.”

Underwood was elected again by her colleagues to serve in House leadership for the 119th Congress, as Co-Chair of the Democratic Policy and Communications Committee. Underwood is the second Black woman in U.S. history to be elected to House leadership after Representative Shirley Chisholm, who was elected Secretary of the Democratic Caucus in 1977.
