Underwood’s Statement on the Three-Year Anniversary of the Insurrection at the U.S. Capitol

January 6, 2024

WASHINGTON – Today, Congresswoman Lauren Underwood (IL-14) released the following statement on the three-year anniversary of the January 6 attack on the Capitol.

“Three years ago today, on direct orders from former President Trump, more than 2,000 insurrectionists attacked the United States Capitol to undermine the peaceful transition of power. January 6 was an attack on our democracy that we must never forget,” Underwood said.

“The violent attack resulted in five deaths and hundreds of injuries among the brave law enforcement officials who defended the Capitol that day, and today we honor their service and their sacrifices.

“House Republicans, led by Speaker Mike Johnson, worked with former President Trump as he tried to fraudulently overturn the results of the 2020 election. They voted to block an investigation into the most basic facts of the attack, and they continue to take orders from former President Trump for political gain. These actions are a grave threat to our democracy.

“Our democracy is too precious and too essential to let it slip away, and I remain committed to protecting our fundamental values and holding those responsible for the January 6 attack accountable.”
