Underwood’s Statement on the Two-Year Anniversary of the Insurrection at the U.S. Capitol
WASHINGTON – Today, Congresswoman Lauren Underwood (IL-14) released the following statement on the two-year anniversary of the January 6 attack on the Capitol.
“Two years ago, violent insurrectionists attacked the United States Capitol, seeking to halt the peaceful transition of power. It was an assault not just on this institution, but on the foundations of democracy itself, and it was a deeply dark day in our nation’s history,” Underwood said.
“Today, we honored the heroes who defended the Capitol during the insurrection and the lives tragically lost as a result of the violence and terror of the attack. House Democrats are committed to holding those responsible accountable and to protecting our democracy. On the House floor, though, House Republicans spent the day elevating leaders who have failed to demonstrate those fundamental American values.
“Our democracy is too precious and too essential to let it slip away. I am thankful for the essential work of the bipartisan Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol. Under Chairman Bennie Thompson’s leadership, the Committee answered the public’s call for truth and healing, and presented the facts of the deadly attack with unprecedented transparency. I am thankful for the dedication and tireless work of the Committee Members and staff who helped fulfill that mission.
“While I am disappointed that my colleagues across the aisle continue to downplay the insurrection and President Trump’s role in inciting the attack, our fight for truth and justice will not be deterred. No one is above the law.”
